Is My Acid Real, or Is It NBOMe? How to Tell
The bitter taste test is real but unreliable. Ehrlich reagent is the answer: LSD turns it purple, NBOMe produces no colour change at all.

The test that answers this is Ehrlich’s reagent. It reacts with indoles, so LSD turns it purple, and NBOMe compounds produce no colour change at all. On blotter, no reaction means it is not LSD.
Give it up to 20 minutes before you call it. Ehrlich is slow, and reading it early is how people get a false negative.
The bitter taste heuristic is real, and it is not a test. NBOMe is commonly described as bitter or numbing on the tongue while LSD is usually tasteless, but that difference is subjective, dose-dependent, and confirming it means holding a suspected NBOMe tab in your mouth, which is the exposure you were trying to avoid.

Why the bitter test is not enough
The heuristic came from real reports, consistent enough that it entered scene folklore fast. LSD is active in such tiny quantities that there is almost nothing on the paper to taste. But NBOMe absorbs through the oral mucosa, which is its intended route of administration, so by the time you decide it tastes wrong you have taken part of a dose of the compound with the narrow margin.
Taste also fails on its own terms. Blotter paper has a flavour, ink has a flavour, and people’s thresholds differ. A low-dose NBOMe tab may not read as strongly bitter, and a tab that tastes of paper tells you nothing. Treat bitterness as a warning that ends the evening, never as clearance.
Purple means indole, and that is the whole trick
Ehrlich’s reagent is dimethylaminobenzaldehyde in acid, and it reacts with the indole ring. That single fact does all the work.

- DMT: purple
- Psilocybin and psilocin: purple
- NBOMe compounds (25I, 25B, 25C and relatives): no reaction, no colour change
- DOx compounds, other phenethylamines: no reaction
NBOMes are substituted phenethylamines, structurally unrelated to lysergamides. They have no indole ring, so Ehrlich has nothing to grab. A blotter tab that produces no colour change on Ehrlich is not LSD. That negative result is the whole reason to own this reagent.
Give it 20 minutes. Ehrlich is the slowest reagent in common use. Colour often starts building within a few minutes, but DanceSafe’s instructions state it may take up to 20 minutes to react fully. The most common user error is reading at 60 seconds, seeing nothing, and either binning good acid or calling the test inconclusive and taking it anyway. Set a timer. Blotter carries very little material, so technique differs from testing powder. Use a corner or a quarter tab, because the reagent needs something to react with and a tiny snip may not carry enough; a quarter tab in a white spot plate well is a reasonable trade for knowing what you are holding. Watch the paper rather than the liquid, since the purple develops in and around the wetted paper instead of colouring the whole droplet. Ignore the printed dye, which bleeds into the reagent and produces colours unrelated to the reaction, so look for a developing purple and not a pink smear from the ink. Gels are much denser than paper and react slowly, so allow extra time before calling one negative.
What Ehrlich cannot do is narrow the class. It cannot separate LSD from 1P-LSD, 1cP-LSD, ALD-52, DMT or psilocybin, all of which turn it purple, and it cannot tell you dose, which is what matters most on blotter. A 75 microgram tab and a 300 microgram tab produce the same purple. Pair it with Hofmann reagent for a second data point, since lysergamides drive Hofmann to a deep blue while NBOMe does not. Most drug substitution is a disappointment. This one kills people, and the reason is arithmetic.
LSD is active in the microgram range with an unusually wide margin. A review of its pharmacology concludes that LSD is physiologically well tolerated, with the serious risks being psychological and situational rather than toxic. A case series of accidental overdoses includes a person who insufflated roughly 550 times a normal recreational dose and survived. Taking twice as much LSD as you meant to is a longer, far more intense night. It is rarely a medical emergency by itself.
NBOMe compounds fit on the same square of paper at similar-looking doses and behave nothing like that. Receptor work shows them to be extremely potent 5-HT2A agonists, and a 2020 pharmacology review describes them as highly potent and toxic alternatives to LSD. Clinical reports document seizures, agitated delirium, hyperthermia, hypertension, rhabdomyolysis and multi-organ failure, including a cluster of hospitalised 25B-NBOMe cases and deaths in people who believed they were taking LSD.
The gap between a recreational NBOMe dose and a toxic one is narrow, and blotter is not a precise delivery system: the drop that soaked one square does not carry the same amount as the drop next to it. Even the seller may not know which compound is on the paper, because supply analyses find NBOMes substituted for each other.
Two other things people mistake for evidence
Unusually large or thick blotter. LSD needs almost no space, and the standard quarter-inch square exists because that is all the paper a dose requires. A tab that is oversized, printed on thick card, or heavy in the hand means someone needed more surface area for more material, which is consistent with a compound active at higher amounts than LSD. A prompt to test rather than proof, but an unusual format deserves suspicion.
“It must be real because it was expensive.” Cost tracks scarcity and market position, not identity, and a well-meaning seller a few steps down the chain is passing on what they were told. Nobody in that chain ran an assay. Same for “everyone else took it and they were fine”: sheets are not homogeneous, and severe NBOMe reactions have hit some people from a sheet while others reported an ordinary trip.
So: bitterness is a warning, Ehrlich is the test, and no colour change on blotter means it is not LSD. Wait the full 20 minutes, use a corner or quarter tab so the reagent has material to work with, and remember that purple confirms a class and never a dose.
