How to Test 2C-B: Which Reagent Actually Works

Testing 2C-B: a weak Marquis reaction is real information, not a failed test. Which reagents to run, how to read them, and why tusi changes the answer.

Testing something sold as 2C-B works differently from testing MDMA, and the difference trips people up before they even look at the plate. 2C-B does not give the fast purple-to-black that MDMA gives on Marquis, so a pale, weak or slow Marquis result on a 2C-B sample is data rather than a broken test. People see that nothing dramatic happened, decide the reagent is dead or their technique was off, and throw away the single most useful thing the test told them: this is not MDMA.

Why the weak reaction is the point

The Marquis reaction people know is MDMA’s: saturated purple darkening to black inside the first minute, driven by the methylenedioxy ring that MDMA and MDA share. 2C-B does not have that ring. It is a bromo-dimethoxy phenethylamine, and it reacts differently and far less dramatically.

DanceSafe widened its published 2C-B ranges once real-world results stopped fitting the older narrow entries. The current Marquis range runs bright yellow to dark black or green, with everything in between. That is a wide band and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. What the band excludes is MDMA’s signature, so the reading that matters is not which yellow you got.

  • Fast purple to black: not 2C-B. That is an MDMA-class compound.
  • Orange to brown: an amphetamine-type stimulant, also not 2C-B.
  • Yellow, green, olive, or a slow dark: inside the expected 2C-B range, and inside several other substances’ ranges too. An absence of red flags, not a confirmation.
  • No visible change: Marquis is not reacting with the dominant compound. Ketamine and cocaine both stay yellow.

Always run a blank, one drop of reagent on a clean part of the plate with no sample on it. Reagents are tinted and darken with age, and the usual reason someone calls a faint 2C-B reaction “nothing” is having no reference for what the untouched bottle looks like today.

Liebermann is the reagent that earns its place

Liebermann is potassium nitrite in concentrated sulfuric acid. It starts clear, reacts fast, and has to be read inside roughly 40 to 45 seconds before oxidation drags every result dark.

It gives 2C-B a shape rather than only a color. DanceSafe’s current entry runs light yellow through dark black with a yellow ring, and everything in between. That ring at the droplet’s edge is a structural feature instead of one point on a color scale, so it survives the fact that the color range is broad.

It also separates the things you are realistically holding. Cocaine goes light yellow through orange to a brick red-orange, MDMA and MDA go intense fast brown-black, ketamine gives a very pale yellow that is easy to read as nothing, and cathinones like mephedrone go bright yellow. Neither of them confirms identity, and this is where honesty about limits matters most: several substances, the cathinone dipentylone among them, produce reactions DanceSafe describes as nearly impossible to tell apart from 2C-B. Reagents narrow possibilities and catch substitutions. If identity genuinely matters to you, send a sample to a lab, listed in where to get drugs tested.

A mixture defeats a single reagent

If you are holding pink powder sold as tusi, the odds are strong that it contains no 2C-B at all. Drug checking and forensic datasets keep finding ketamine-based mixtures, usually with MDMA in them. The evidence is in 2C-B vs tusi. The point here is about method.

Reagent colors are not additive. A compound that gives a strong dark reaction visually swamps one that gives a pale reaction, so a sample containing MDMA and ketamine reads as MDMA and the ketamine never shows up. A single result on a mixed sample is not just incomplete, it can point you confidently at a wrong answer. If a “2C-B” sample gives fast purple-black on Marquis and fast brown-black on Liebermann, treat it as MDMA and use MDMA’s dose and risk profile.

The protocol

You need Marquis, Liebermann, a white ceramic spot plate or kit tray, a clean blade, a fentanyl strip, white light, and a milligram scale.

  1. Take about 10 mg, a match-head grain, crushed fine. More sample makes color harder to read, not easier.
  2. Add one or two drops without letting the dropper touch the powder, which contaminates the bottle.
  3. Marquis first, noting the color at 5, 15, 30 and 60 seconds. Speed is information, and a color that only shows up after two or three minutes is oxidation rather than a result.
  4. Liebermann on a fresh sample in a separate well, read inside 45 seconds, watching the droplet edge for the ring.
  5. Compare both against blanks under daylight or white LED. Colored club lighting is the leading cause of misjudged colors, which is the argument for testing at home.

Then run a fentanyl strip separately, because no reagent detects fentanyl at the doses that kill people. Dissolve about 10 mg in at least 5 mL of water, dip for 15 seconds, lay it flat, read at 2 to 5 minutes. One line is positive, two lines is negative, no lines means invalid. Weighing matters here more than almost anywhere

2C-B is active in the low tens of milligrams, and a common oral dose sits in the mid-teens to mid-twenties. The entire distance between a manageable evening and an overwhelming one can be under 10 mg of powder, which is a difference your eye cannot see. A reagent tells you at best that nothing obviously wrong is in there. It tells you nothing about how much active drug is sitting in front of you.

Use a 0.001 g scale, and do not redose during onset, which for oral 2C-B can run 45 to 90 minutes. Redosing into a slow come-up is the most common route to an accidental heavy dose. Ranges and the full timeline are in our 2C-B guide.

The absence of a big reaction is the result. Marquis sitting yellow, green or olive instead of racing to purple-black is the reagent doing its job, and calling that a failed test throws the information away. Marquis for the red flag, Liebermann for the second opinion and the ring, a strip for fentanyl, a scale before you dose.
