How to Test Ketamine: Morris Reagent Guide

Morris is the current ketamine reagent, in two parts used on one sample. The workflow, the limits, and why Mandelin was dropped.

Ketamine is tested with Morris reagent, which is unusual because it comes in two parts, Morris A and Morris B, applied to the same sample one after the other and then stirred. DanceSafe reports ketamine finishing purple with Morris and describes it as the only drug they know of that ends purple, while most non-reacting substances settle into a dull green. If you have read older guidance saying to use Mandelin, that guidance is out of date. What Morris gives you is a likely yes on ketamine. What it cannot give you is dose, purity, or certainty that no substituted dissociative is in there.

The two-part workflow

This is the part that trips people up. Morris is not one bottle, both parts go onto the same sample rather than two separate scrapings, and there is a stirring step no other reagent has. DanceSafe’s instructions for the ketamine testing kit:

  1. Put your sample on a white plate. Ceramic or hard white plastic, ideally a spot plate, never a test tube. You need a clean background to read color against.
  2. Use at least 5 to 10 mg, roughly a match-head scraping. The kit’s 10 mg micro scoop takes the guesswork out.
  3. One drop of Morris A, the pink liquid, onto the sample.
  4. One drop of Morris B, the clear liquid, onto the same sample.
  5. Stir for a full 30 seconds with a toothpick or a knife point. This is mandatory, and skipping it is the most common way to get a meaningless Morris result.
  6. Read the final color against the chart in your kit, under good white light.

Two things about reading it. Blue speckles often appear after Morris A goes on, and DanceSafe says to ignore them, because they are not the result. And it is the end color that counts, which is the opposite habit from Marquis, where the fast initial change carries the information.

A dull green end color means you do not have ketamine. It does not tell you what you do have. Why Morris replaced Mandelin

DanceSafe’s own product material states plainly that they no longer recommend Mandelin for ketamine, citing inconsistency and false positives.

The trouble with an inconsistent reagent is not that it fails to react. It is that it reacts in a way that overlaps with other substances, so you get a color, match it to a chart, and walk away confidently wrong. That is worse than not testing, because a wrong result changes what you do in exactly the same direction a right one would. Morris was adopted because its endpoint separates more cleanly. The substitution problem

This is the honest limit that matters most. 2-FDCK, DCK and MXE all circulate in supply sold as ketamine, sometimes knowingly, sometimes because the seller believes what they were told. They differ in potency, duration and risk. DCK and MXE run notably longer, which is how people end up redosing on a ketamine schedule and going much deeper than they planned.

Morris does real work here. DanceSafe reports 2-FDCK and DCK turning dark blue or grey rather than purple, so a clearly non-purple result on something sold as ketamine is a signal worth acting on, and that is better separation than most reagents manage on close relatives.

Do not over-trust it, though. A reagent distinguishes chemical classes, not individual molecules, and dissociative analogs are structurally close enough that clean separation across the whole family is not guaranteed. We could not verify a published Morris color for MXE in current manufacturer material, so we are not going to invent one. A purple result is consistent with ketamine and makes the common analogs less likely. It is not proof. If a batch feels markedly stronger, longer or just different in character from what you know, believe the experience over the color. The only tools that name a specific analog with confidence are laboratory ones: mass spectrometry or infrared spectroscopy at a drug checking service, not a color on a plate.

The fentanyl strip is a separate test

No reagent detects fentanyl, because it is active at doses far too small to move a color reaction. The DanceSafe ketamine kit ships with one strip and a 10 mg micro scoop, and strips are single-use, so that one strip covers exactly one sample. Testing more than once means buying fentanyl test strips in quantity.

  1. Dissolve about 10 mg in at least a teaspoon (5 mL) of water. More water is safer than less.
  2. Dip for about 15 seconds, up to the marked line.
  3. Lay it flat, wait 2 to 5 minutes.
  4. One line is POSITIVE, two lines is NEGATIVE. No lines at all means invalid, so run a fresh strip.

That direction is backwards from most rapid tests people have used, and reversing it is the single most common mistake in drug checking. One line means fentanyl was detected and you should not use the sample. Full detail in our fentanyl test strip guide.

What a purple result still does not tell you

  • Dose. No reagent measures how much active drug is there, and ketamine potency varies enough between batches for that to matter.
  • Purity. Morris identifies the dominant compound. Cuts and minor adulterants under a strong reaction may never show.
  • Which dissociative, in every case. Morris separates some analogs, not the family.
  • R or S. Recreational ketamine is racemic and no consumer test splits the enantiomers.

And it only covers the bag you tested. Supply is not homogeneous, so a clean result on this one says nothing about the next, which is the argument in do you need to test every batch.

Both parts on one 5 to 10 mg sample, stir a full 30 seconds, ignore the speckles, read the end color, then run a strip separately.
