Do Reagent Test Kits Expire? Storage and Shelf Life

Yes. Reagents degrade with heat, light and moisture. DanceSafe says most last at least a year refrigerated. How to store them and when to replace.

Yes, they expire, and a degraded reagent is more dangerous than no reagent, because it still produces a color and you will still believe it. DanceSafe’s guidance is that most reagents last at least a year stored in a refrigerator or freezer, and that keeping them out of heat and sunlight is what buys you that year.

Nothing about a dying bottle looks broken. It reacts weakly, or slowly, or gives a muddy color you read as the wrong substance, and you dose on a result that was never valid.

Why they go off

Reagents are aggressive chemistry in a very small bottle, and the reactivity that makes them useful is what makes them fragile. Marquis is formaldehyde in concentrated sulfuric acid. Froehde is molybdic acid in the same acid, Mandelin is ammonium vanadate in it. The pattern repeats down the chart: something reactive carried in something strongly acidic.

Three things work on that over time.

  • Water. Concentrated sulfuric acid pulls water vapor out of the air. Every loosely capped bottle dilutes itself a little, and diluted acid drives the color reaction less hard, so colors come out fainter and later.
  • Oxidation. The formaldehyde in Marquis oxidizes; oxidizing reagents react slowly with whatever is around. Products accumulate and the liquid darkens.
  • Heat and light. Both speed up everything above. A bottle that would have lasted a year in a fridge can be visibly different after one hot weekend in a car.

Dark is not the same as dead

This part gets people binning good bottles and trusting dead ones, so it is worth being precise.

Some darkening is expected. DanceSafe’s own instructions say Marquis and Mecke gradually darken with age and stay usable. Fresh Marquis is clear to pale straw and drifts through yellow toward amber over months. Mandelin is stranger still: it starts light orange and goes cloudy yellow at three to four weeks, which is how it behaves, not a defect.

The endpoint that matters is readability. A reagent is finished when the liquid is too dark to see a color reaction happening inside it. If your Marquis is already deep amber in the bottle, a purple-to-black MDMA result and a brown methamphetamine result are the same dark smear, and the test has stopped distinguishing anything.

Speed and intensity count as much as hue. Fresh reagent produces its color fast and hard. A tired one gives a pale version, or takes a minute, or fades while you watch. If a reaction you have run a dozen times comes out washed out, suspect the bottle before you suspect the sample.

The failure that actually hurts people

A dead flashlight tells you it is dead. A dead reagent does not. It still drips, still changes color, still hands you an answer.

Two ways that goes wrong. A weak reaction gets read as no reaction, so you conclude nothing reactive is present and clear a sample you never really tested. Or a muddy color gets read as the wrong drug: degradation shifts results toward brown, so real MDMA can read as amphetamine, or land ambiguous enough that you talk yourself into the answer you were hoping for. Skipping a test leaves you appropriately uncertain. Running a bad test leaves you confidently wrong, and confidence is what changes behavior.

Storing them so they last

DanceSafe’s version is short: out of heat, out of sunlight, freezer ideal, fridge fine. The practical version:

  • Refrigerate or freeze. Much the highest-impact step. A drawer in a cool interior room is second best. A windowsill, a car, or the top of the fridge, which is warm, is not storage.
  • Cap it tightly every single time. A loose cap leaks in the other direction, letting water in.
  • Upright and dark. A tipped dropper bottle leaks corrosive acid. The box it came in is fine.
  • Never touch the bottle tip to a sample. That contaminates the whole bottle and ends its life on the spot. Drip from above, always.
  • Bring only what you need to an event. A festival bag is hot, bright and shaken. Take the one or two bottles you will actually use, keep them shaded, leave the rest cold at home.
  • Let a cold bottle warm up before testing. Cold reagent reacts slowly and reads as weak.

Two checks before you trust a bottle

Run a blank. One drop of reagent on clean white ceramic, no sample. That is your starting color and your comparison for the reacted drop, and it takes five seconds. Do it beside every test. If the blank is dark enough that you would struggle to see a change inside it, the bottle is done.

Test something you already know. This is the strongest check available outside a lab. If you have a bit of something that gave a clean textbook result with this reagent before, run it again. Fresh Marquis on MDMA goes purple to black fast and unmistakably. A slow, pale or off-hue version of what you saw last time means the reagent has moved. An old bottle that still produces a strong, fast, textbook color is probably fine. One that produces something ambiguous has told you nothing, and ambiguous is not a result to dose on.

Replace it when

The blank is too dark to read a reaction against. A known sample comes out wrong or badly weakened. The bottle has been through real heat, a summer in a car or a weekend in a hot tent, in which case it may still work but you no longer know that it does. The dropper tip has touched a sample. Or it has simply sat at room temperature for a long stretch, since the at-least-a-year figure is tied to cold storage and a warm bottle has no equivalent guarantee.

Reagents are consumables. One bottle runs 50 to 75 tests, so a replacement costs very little per test compared to what people assume. Dispose of old reagents at a hazardous waste facility rather than down a drain. They are concentrated acid.
