A single DanceSafe reagent bottle performs 50 to 75 tests. Not one, not five. That applies to each bottle in a kit, so a kit holding several reagents holds several bottles’ worth.
One test is a single drop on a scraping about the size of a match head, roughly 10 mg, which is a fraction of a dose and a tiny fraction of the bottle. That number answers the objection people actually have, which is that a kit feels like a lot for a one-off. It is not a one-off.

What one test actually consumes
- Scrape off about 10 mg, roughly a match head or a grain of rice, onto a clean white non-porous surface. A ceramic spot plate is the purpose-built version, with separate wells so tests do not run into each other.
- Add one drop of reagent from above, without letting the bottle tip touch the sample. Touching the tip to material contaminates the entire bottle and ends its life instantly.
- Watch the first 30 to 60 seconds. That window is where the diagnostic color appears. Compare against a blank drop of the same reagent placed nearby.

The mental model comes from pregnancy tests
Almost everyone who has not bought one pictures the wrong object. Pregnancy tests, COVID tests and breathalyzer tubes are sealed devices you use once and throw out. Under that model a reagent kit looks like a per-use purchase, which makes it feel unjustifiable for occasional use, and the decision quietly becomes “not this time.”
The physical reality is a small dropper bottle of liquid, closer to a bottle of iodine than to a home test device. Nothing about a single test consumes it. Two things reinforce the misconception: kits ship in a small box that looks like a single-use product, and reagents are usually discussed one test at a time, so nobody mentions the arithmetic. The arithmetic is the whole story. It turns a kit from a per-use charge into a piece of equipment you own.
What actually limits how many tests you get
The 50 to 75 range is a realistic band, not a guarantee, and what pushes you toward the low end is technique or storage rather than how often you test.
- Wasted drops. Squeezing too hard puts two or three drops where one was needed. Squeeze gently and stop.
- Drops that run down the outside. Tipping the bottle too far, or squeezing before it is inverted, sends reagent down the side instead of onto the plate. That is lost volume and a corrosive mess on your fingers.
- A contaminated spot plate. Residue from a previous test corrupts the next one, which means retesting, which means more drops. Clean and dry the plate between tests, neutralizing with baking soda before you wash it.
- A contaminated bottle. Touching the dropper tip to material or to a used well ruins the whole bottle at once, whatever its remaining volume.
- Degradation over time. This is the quiet one. A bottle stored warm or in sunlight can become unreadable long before the drops run out. See whether reagent test kits expire for storage that protects the bottle you paid for.

Three reagents is still one test’s worth from each
No single reagent identifies a substance on its own, so a proper check uses two or three in parallel. That does not multiply how many tests you have used from any one bottle.

The practical consequence is that bottles run down in parallel rather than serially, so they reach empty at roughly the same time. If you only ever test one substance, one kit covers you for a long while.
Strips are the exception, and the one people under-buy
Everything above applies to reagents. It does not apply to fentanyl test strips.
One strip tests one sample, then it is finished. A strip is a lateral flow immunoassay, the same format as a home COVID test. Once the sample has wicked up the membrane, the strip cannot be reused, re-dipped, or dried out and run again. Four samples across a weekend needs four strips.
