Milligram Scale for Drugs: Do You Need One?

A milligram scale is accurate enough for MDMA doses and useless for LSD. What readability actually means, why calibration matters, and when to skip it.

You need a milligram scale if you take powders dosed in tens or hundreds of milligrams. You do not need one at all if your substance is dosed in micrograms. That split covers most of the decision. A scale is the right tool for MDMA, ketamine, 2C-B and ground mushrooms. It is the wrong tool for LSD and anything active below about a milligram, where the answer is volumetric dosing rather than better hardware.

Two things to get straight first

Is 0.001 g readability the same as 1 mg accuracy? No, and this is the thing product listings work hardest to obscure. A budget 0.001 g scale is unreliable below roughly 10 to 20 mg no matter how many decimals it prints.

Do I need calibration weights? Yes. These scales drift with use, temperature and transport, and they often arrive uncalibrated. An uncalibrated milligram scale is a random number generator with a nice display.

Why the display lies at the bottom of the range

Readability is the smallest increment the screen can show. Accuracy is how close that number is to the true mass. On consumer scales the second is worse than the first, often several times worse near the floor of the range, because load cells have a noise floor and a scale near it will happily print three decimal places of invented precision. Put the same 5 mg of material on and off a budget scale ten times and you get a spread of readings, all shown to the milligram, none of them worth anything.

So: treat a consumer milligram scale as unreliable below roughly 10 to 20 mg. Above that it is a genuinely useful instrument. That is not a reason to skip buying one, it is a reason to know which question yours can answer.

Where a scale earns its keep

2C-B and dissociatives, most of all. Harm reduction organisations put a common oral 2C-B dose at roughly 15 to 25 mg, with 25 mg and above described as strong. No controlled trial has established those figures. The gap between a comfortable evening and an overwhelming one can be 5 to 10 mg of powder, which you cannot see on a spoon or a folded paper. That range sits above the noise floor and steep on the dose-response curve, which is exactly where weighing pays. More in our 2C-B guide.

MDMA. The range cited across harm reduction organisations is 75 to 125 mg orally, with 1 to 1.5 mg/kg capped at 120 mg as the common weight-based heuristic, though no trial has tested that rule. The controlled clinical numbers come from the MAPS Phase 3 PTSD trials, which used 80 mg as a starting dose and 120 mg as the higher therapeutic dose under medical supervision. Ketamine. Here the reason is density. A milligram is a milligram whether the material is coarse shards or fine dust, but fine powder packs more densely, so the same visually sized line holds meaningfully more drug. That is the ordinary explanation for a batch that “hit way harder,” and there is no way to see it. More in R vs S ketamine.

Ground mushrooms. The difference between 0.1 g and 0.3 g of powder is invisible, and microdosing is entirely about staying under a threshold you cannot see. Grind a whole batch evenly first, because a single cap is not representative of the flush. See microdosing psilocybin.

A micro scoop helps with all of these, but know its job. It moves small amounts of powder onto the pan without spilling or static-flinging them. It does not measure. Scoop, weigh, adjust, weigh again.

Calibrate it, then calibrate it again

Run the calibration routine when the scale arrives, again if it has been knocked or travelled, and periodically after that. You need a calibration weight of the right mass, usually 20 g or 50 g depending on the model. DanceSafe does not sell these, so source a set from a lab supply or scale retailer. Do not skip it because the scale seems fine; drift is not visible from the display.

Technique changes the reading at these masses:

  • Level, solid surface. Not a bed, not a couch arm, not your lap. Use the bubble level if the scale has one.
  • No draught. A ceiling fan, open window or air vent moves the reading by several milligrams. Close the draught shield.
  • Watch for static. Dry air plus a plastic boat plus fine powder means powder that jumps. Wipe the boat, or use paper.
  • Weighing paper or a boat, then tare. Never put powder straight on the pan.
  • Let it settle. Wait for the number to stop moving before you believe it.
  • Room temperature. A cold scale drifts as it warms.

Where no scale will help you

Micrograms. LSD at around 100 micrograms is 0.1 mg, deep inside the range where the display is showing you noise, and a pricier scale does not fix this. The method that works is volumetric dosing: dissolve a known quantity in a known volume of liquid, then measure the liquid. Measuring 1 mL of solution is repeatable in a way that measuring 100 micrograms of solid never will be. Pressed pills of unknown content. Weighing a tablet gives you the combined mass of active ingredient, binder and filler in unknown proportions. A 300 mg pill might hold 80 mg of MDMA or 220 mg. Split and wait instead.

Anything sold by unit, blotter and tabs included. There is nothing for the scale to measure.

Telling you what you have. This is the mistake that matters. A scale answers “how much” and never “what.” A precisely weighed 90 mg of unidentified white powder is still unidentified white powder. What to buy, and what to expect from it

If you use powders dosed above about 20 mg, a milligram scale is one of the highest-value harm reduction purchases there is, and the DanceSafe one funds a nonprofit running free drug checking at events.
